Free iPhone App: Keep track of your drink limits

Britons can now keep a tab on how much alcohol they are drinking, courtesy of a free smart phone application.

The free iPhone application was launched by public health minister Gillian Merron Monday as the festive party season gets under way.

The device which can be downloaded onto smart phones like the iPhone, will allow users to see how many units of alcohol there are in their drink, keep a running total of their consumption and get personalised feedback on their drinking habits.

Studies have shown that people underestimate how much alcohol they have drunk on a night out and may exceed the safe limits without realising it.

Recommended limits are two to three units a day for women - the equivalent of one medium to large glass of wine - and three to four units a day for men - a large glass to a glass and a half, or two pints of beer - with at least two alcohol-free days a week.

Drink-driving during the festive season is a major public health concern in Britain.

The number of people killed from drinking and driving fell from 560 in 2006 to 406 in 2007 and those seriously injured from 1,970 to 1,760 during the same period.

The app is available from iTunes and www.nhs.uk .[via Thaindian News]

Free iPhone App From Biblica to Bring Inspiration to Job Seekers

Employing Hope, the iPhone application from Biblica, provides encouragement and tips in an easy-to-read format for those out of work.In this struggling economy, headline after headline echoes what many already know—finding work is an uphill climb. For those in the hunt, bills stack up and tensions rise with seemingly no relief on the horizon. It’s a time of hopelessness for some and even depression for others.

Employing Hope, a no-cost iPhone application by Biblica, looks to shine a ray of light into the lives affected by the faltering economy through thought-provoking, biblical insight as well as practical suggestions for improving employment prospects. With design by ImageStudios, the single-page devotionals are easy to leaf through and provide at-a-glance inspiration with a scriptural perspective on unemployment.

“We are experiencing an economic crisis unlike anything most of us have been equipped to handle,” said Biblica Outreach Director Sues Hyde. “People need hope and encouragement to remain emotionally and spiritually strong in these tough times. Our hope at Biblica is that they’ll use these resources and find them helpful, and that they’ll feel comfortable sharing them with others in similar circumstances.”

Bing Brings Porn to iPhone

Move over adult mobile marketers, Microsoft is coming for your market share with the release of a free iPhone app for its popular, porn friendly Bing search engine.

Both praised and criticized for the ease and efficiency with which it presents hardcore adult entertainment, Bing has been making industry headlines since its launch. That situation isn't likely to change anytime soon, as the extent of the new app's porn-viewing prowess becomes better known.

"We like everybody and the key thing is what platforms and experiences users want and how to meet their needs," Bing for Mobile product manager Justin Jed said.

According to TechCrunch.com's MG Siegler, Bing has always been exceptionally good at finding porn, and its new iPhone app is no different.

"The porn results are nothing, if not impressive," Siegler said.

While Siegler notes that the app is rated for users 4+ years old, it is quite easy to gain access to hardcore porn with just a few clicks.

"This continues to highlight Apple's hypocrisy when it comes to the App Store," Siegler opined. "Apps that allow you to lift up Asian schoolgirl's outfits are just fine. Apps that make satirical references to public figures are banned. And now, apps that gives you hardcore porn at your fingertips are rated 4+. Sure, this content in on the web, and not in the app itself, but to a viewer, what's the difference?"

Make Cheap iPhone Skype Calls Over the 3G Network

Want to use Skype to make calls when you’re out of WiFi hotspots? Imagine if you could use Skype ANYTIME, ANYWHERE by using your Rogers/Fido data plan! You can do so by following the steps below…

1. Jailbreak your iPhone (follow our guide here). If you’re on an iPhone 3GS, I’d highly suggest purchasing 3G Unrestrictor to allow Skype to work over 3G.

If you’re using an iPhone 3G, just install VoIPOver3G via Cydia, and it will automatically hack Skype to work over 3G.

2. Turn off WiFi to test the 3G capability. Launch Skype, login. Now, go try to make a call and voila! Skype over the Rogers/Fido 3G network on your iPhone! The sound quality is amazing! Listen for yourself with the Skype Test Call.

3. Now with calling over 3G, you can subscribe to Skype and pay $3 for unlimited calling to Canada/USA! AND get Caller ID for Skype!

Enjoy making calls over 3G. Don’t worry, it won’t use up your 6GB data plan unless you’re talking for 24 hours straight non-stop. Skype has been one of my favourite apps now because of this little hack. Let me know how this works for you!

Free iPhone Apps You Need To Download Right Now

Nobody wants to pay for iPhone apps, and some people simply don’t. The good news is, you don’t really need to: For almost every paid app, there’s a free app that’s nearly as good. Here are the best of the best.

A lot of these apps will be familiar to anyone who’s checked out our Essential iPhone Apps directory before, and yeah, there is a lot of overlap. What we’ve done, basically, is strip out the paid apps from the list, then fill in the gaps with more free. With the new list, you can turn a fresh, untouched iPhone or iPod Touch into an apped-out powerhouse without spending a dime.

The Free iPhone Apps:

Amazon: Amazon’s usually the first place I look during a fit of impulse buying, which their iPhone app now makes stupidly easy.

Product searches, comparisons and account management are a given, but what really pushes this one over the edge is a new feature called “Remembers”. Just snap a picture of a mysterious product or thing, and Amazon will get back to you with a surprisingly accurate, impressively quick suggestion as to what it is. Then it will sell said thing to you. Magic.

Dropbox: Keeps selected files in sync between your iPhone, computer and online account with almost no effort. Comes with 2GB of free online storage.

The Best Point and Shoot Cameras for Every Purpose

The Best Point and Shoot Cameras for Every Purpose

Mark Goldstein is the Editor of Photography Blog. And he's been so kind as provide us with his favorite point and shoot picks in every key category.

Best for lowlight

Canon PowerShot S90 ($400)

The camera of the moment, the popular PowerShot S90 is a small but perfectly formed compact for the keen photographer. Concentrating on image quality rather than simply joining in the megapixel race (just like Sony's TX1 / WX1 models), the S90 offers DSLR-like results in a pocketable device, making it the perfect second camera for any self-respecting DSLR owner. A sensible resolution of 10 megapixels and fast zoom lens make the S90 an excellent choice when the lighting drops. This is one camera that you carry everywhere and still achieve breath-taking photos that will look great on your wall. [Review]

Best bang for your buck

Samsung HZ15W ($250)

Samsung can always be relied upon to deliver more for less, and the HZ15W is certainly no different. The HZ15W can't quite match every feature that its main rivals offer, but it does cost a lot less than them. With an amazingly versatile 10x zoom lens, high-definition video and a wealth of beginner-friendly modes, this well-designed camera is simple to use yet offers enough features and quality to satisfy more experienced photographers. The HZ15W could well be the only camera that you ever need. [Review]

Best video/still crossover

Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 ($400)

The Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ7 is not only one of the best video compacts on the market, it's also one of the best cameras full stop. Support for the AVCHD Lite format almost doubles the recording time, albeit at the expense of editing ease. The dedicated Record button, stereo microphone, wind cut function and audio sampling at 48kHz combine to make the TZ7 a star performer for moving images. It's also a fantastic stills camera too, with an incredibly versatile 12x zoom and top-notch image quality - a great do-it-all, carry-everywhere device. [Review]

Best super slim model

Sony TX1 ($300)

Sony has long ruled the roost in the 'it's so slim you can barely see it' category, and the desirable TX1 continues that tradition. Combining a sturdy yet stylish metal body, clever sliding front plate and impressive folded lens optics in a frame that's just 14.1mm thick, the TX1 still manages to pack in a 4x zoom lens and 3-inch touch-sensitive rear screen. You also get the added bonus of Sony's impressive 'Exmor R' back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which greatly improves low-light performance. Available in a variety of attractive colors to match your personality, the TX1 is guaranteed to look as good as you. [Review]

Best wet and rugged

Pentax Optio W80 ($210)

Ed note: Brian Lam reviewed most every rugged camera under the sun last summer, and his favorite all around performer went to the Pentax W80, a Jack-of-all-trades rugged cam featuring a 5x internal zoom lens. Its picture quality doesn't compete with the best point and shoots, and the W80 can only be dropped from around 3 feet, but it can go underwater up to 16 feet and function in temperatures down to 14 degrees. [Review]

There are obviously a lot of other great cameras this year for every budget and level of experience. See all of Photography Blog's camera reviews here (http://www.photographyblog.com/reviews/).

Apple Removes 1000+ iPhone Apps from App Store Following Ratings Scam

Has it ever happened to you that you are so impressed with an iPhone app after reading through its reviews only to find after purchasing it that your own experience with the app is not even close to what the reviewers said?

Folks at the iPhoneography blog have now unearthed an iPhone ratings scam that has wiped off close to 1% of the entire App Store.

The reviews and ratings scam comes to light after one of the readers of the iPhoneography blog revealed that a relatively less popular iPhone app, 'NightCam Pro' had nearly 44 reviews with 5 star ratings. What's more, each of these reviewers had posted all their reviews on iPhone apps released by just a single app developer - China based Molinker Inc. The issue which was brought to the notice of Phil Schiller from Apple resulted in an immediate removal of all the 1011 iPhone apps developed by the company from the App Store.

While the removal of 1000+ apps should come as a bolt out of the blue, not many should find the scam itself surprising. Most iPhone users would have come across reviews that appear shady at least once in a while. How does this actually happen? In this particular case, it is possible that the app developer made use of the 50 promo codes that Apple offers to the developers for every approved app to create these ghost reviewers. Ironically, one of Molinker's apps, ColorMagic which had nearly 203 fake reviews was till recently on the iPhone apps front page as an App Store 'Staff Favorite'.

Only 5 iPhones Sold in Two Weeks by China's Largest E-Tailer

To say that the iPhone is a flop in China is to put it mildly

China is arguably the world's biggest potential electronics market. If you can make a product that's a big hit with Chinese consumers it's almost as big a deal as a hit product in the U.S. -- and China's buying power is expected to only grow even more in the near future. Thus optimism was high when the iPhone finally launched in China.

However, in the time since, the iPhone has proved an epic flop in China even as Chinese telecoms try to defend their weak sales. China Unicom, the phone's carrier only managed to sell 5,000 handsets in the phone's first few days, far less than at equivalent launches in the U.S., UK, France, and Germany. While the telecom says it is satisfied with the phone's sales performance, the numbers are disappointing for a phone that has burned up international sales charts.

One major problem is price. The phone is available in China for 6,999 yuan, or $1,024 without a contract, but can be purchased much cheaper in Hong Kong's so-called "grey market". The grey market cost in Hong Kong is approximately $800. Sales were also hindered by the exclusion of Wi-Fi from the phone, following China's ban on the standard, which it was trying to replace with its own standard. Since May China has begun reallowing Wi-Fi, but new Wi-Fi-ready models still aren't available yet in China.

We briefed you about the Casio EX-Z90 a month or so ago, but that was just the standard boring version, right? Well, it seems that some folks think that adding Hello Kitty branding to any item is a sure way to create and winner, and that’s probably what happened to the Casio EX-Z90.
