Nikon D3s with 1080p video rumored for release next monthThis sort of burst out of nowhere today, but word is that a new Nikon D3s will hit on October 15 -- the crew at NikonRumors puts it at '99 percent probability.' The D3s is expected to add 1080p video and an 14fps burst mode to the D3, as well as a 1.6x crop mode, but other than that we don't know too much. Hasselblad 50 and 60 MP H4D Cameras

hasselbladh4d lg1 Hasselblad 50 and 60 MP H4D Cameras

Hasselblad cameras aren’t the cameras of choice to snap casual candids at the weekend house party, but if you’re a serious photographer looking for an uncompromising set-up, these new upgrades for its H system camera line are certainly a good choice. The most exciting upgrade of the H4D cameras is True Focus-a true off-center autofocus system that uses a yaw rate sensor to detect and compensate for horizontal and vertical movement away from the focus. Automatic adjustment is available for image qualities such as color and vignetting. The camera can connect to a computer via FireWire to bypass internal storage, and features newly-upgraded version of Hasselblad’s Phocus software that will run faster. Here’s where we get to the average-cameramen-need-not-apply portion of the show: the 50MP H4D-50 will run $29,299 and be available in January while the 60MP H4D-60 will be available in November for $42,486.

Google Voice iPhone App Breaks the Law, AT&T Launches iPhone MMS

The excitement of the iPhone finally getting multimedia messaging, is overshadowed by the Google Voice drama

After a long wait AT&T finally rolled out support for the multimedia messaging service (MMS) protocol. This means that iPhones can at last send pictures, video, and audio recordings like users of other smartphones.

IPhones have actually had MMS support built in since June when the iPhone OS v3.0 was released. AT&T, however, kept the functionality disabled for fear it would overload and break its network. Meanwhile, AT&T upgraded much of its network and built extra capacity to handle the service.

On September 22, early last week, it sent a free SMS text message to inform its customers that it would be rolling out the update on Friday. The message read, "AT&T Free Msg: Picture & video messaging (MMS) will be available for iPhone on 9/25. While we prepare your account for MMS capability, the current 'view my message' experience will be turned off but your ability to send and receive text messages will not be affected."

Users began receiving the update when they synced their phones with iTunes on Friday. The update wasn't without its problems -- most of which appear to be software/firmware related. Some users found that their attempts to send MMS failed. Apple and AT&T suggested users first try to reset their networks settings. A more extreme fix involves selecting your iPhone's settings in iTunes and choosing "General > Reset All Settings > enter your pin if prompted". That fix appears to get MMS working, but you may have to reenter your Passcode, Wi-Fi passwords. You may also lose your VPN connections and remembered Wi-Fi networks. A perk, though, is that your apps are arranged alphabetically, something previously not easily done.

Apple Allows iTunes Competitor on App Store

The approval of spotify is a sign of change at Apple

Apple Senior Vice President of Worldwide Product Marketing Phil Schiller has made it his personal mission to fix the iPhone's App Store. Phil Shoemaker, Apple’s Director of Application Technology is also playing a hand. Why would the top brass at a company like Apple be having to work so hard to "fix" a wildly successful marketplace that sold over a billion apps? It boils down to one thing -- perception.

Apple has consistently shown inconsistency, approving usenet applications designed to assist in filesharing, while rejecting others that monitor your torrent client. Likewise it rejected Google Voice, while approving a similar app from VoIP service Vonage. Still other controversial apps -- like the infamous "Babyshaker" app -- it approved only to later reject. However, there are some signs that Apple may finally be loosening up when it comes to its app store censorship.

This week Apple approved Spotify Mobile, a European music download service's application. The app will compete directly with iTunes in digital music sales.

In the past, Apple forbade most applications that competed with the handful of applications it offers for the iPhone. It relaxed this restriction slightly, recently allowing rival web browsers -- but only those based on WebKit, the rendering engine Apple's Safari browser uses.

For those interested, Spotify offers 6 million songs on-demand for $16. You can stream songs to your phone, or download songs to listen to when offline.

Polaroid rolls back the years with their PoGo Instant Digital Camera, where this hybrid printer/camera is able to print out digitally captured photos on the spot, using ZINK (zero ink) technology that can be found on the Polaroid PoGo Instant Photo Printer and the Dell Wasabi PZ310. You will get 5-megapixel photos with this, but the potential downside is the limitation of just 2' x 3' photos. At least there is the option to store your photos on an SD memory card, where you can then transfer it elsewhere to print out selected photos in larger sizes.

Free iPhone Porn App Launched by Sunny Leone

Well, except without any actual porn in it, obviously

We're not up to speed on the finer points of Sunny Leone's work (or at least, we weren't until an eye-popping Google Images search), but we gather she's fairly well known in the adult entertainment world.

Now there's some good news for fans who want to keep up with her doings on their iPhones: yes, there's an app for that. A free one, launched by T3 IT.

This being the app store, it doesn't contain anything that would flout Apple's upper ceiling of a 17+ age rating - the blurb describes it as a "bikini and lingerie model app... although there is no nude picture or video, nudity or pornographic material, the content is very provocative".

Quite. The app offers photo galleries, video clips and Leone's personal blog. A separate paid version has more content for 59p, and T3 IT has launched a similar premium app for another adult star, Aria Giovanni.

Apple has been uncompromising in its no-adult-apps stance for iPhone, but it's interesting to see the adult entertainment world experimenting with tame iPhone apps for promotional purposes in this way.

Pentax's waterproof Optio W80 reviewed: tough as nails, 'so-so' image quality

Pentax's waterproof Optio W80 reviewed: tough as nails, 'so-so' image quality

We've always heard that life was full of compromises, and evidently Pentax made a few when it decided to build its toughest, most rugged point-and-shoot camera of all time. On paper, the Optio W80 looked mighty promising, but in practice, the all-important image quality was found to fall short. Over at PhotographyBLOG, critics found that the camera could withstand 'virtually anything' within reason, and while the 5x optical zoom and HD movie mode were both appreciated, most everything else was at least somewhat disappointing. The anti-shake system was found to simply slow the camera down, and the image quality was hamstrung by excessive noise at all ISO levels -- even 100. Feel free to peek the full review down in the read link, but make sure to keep your expectations in check.

Pentax debuts 12 megapixel duo: Optio M85 and E85 point-and-shoots

Pentax debuts 12 megapixel duo: Optio M85 and E85 point-and-shoots

We'll admit -- compared to the ketchup-colored K-x, these two just seem lackluster. And, perhaps they are. But there's still some merit to Pentax introducing a new pair of point-and-shoots, with both the M85 and E85 sporting 12 megapixel CCD sensors and relatively slim bodies. The former can also shoot 720p video and features a 3-inch touchscreen, shake reduction and face detection, while the lower end E85 gets saddled with a 2.7-inch LCD, a VGA movie mode and an awkward feeling of incompetence. Both should be available in Euroland next month for €179 ($263) and €129 ($186), respectively.

Free iPhone application can help track disease outbreaks

A new application for the iPhone may help veterinarians track the spread of infectious diseases like the H1N1 virus and West Nile virus.

Outbreaks Near Me was developed by John Brownstein, an assistant professor at Children’s Hospital in Boston and a faculty member at Harvard Medical School, and his colleagues. The application is based on a Web site called HealthMap, launched last summer, which scours the Internet for disease-outbreak information and compiles it on a customizable map.

The new application will collect reports from news media and the public about new outbreaks of infectious diseases, and users will be able to set alerts when new outbreaks are reported in their area.

Outbreaks Near Me can be downloaded for free on iTunes. Click here for more information.

Pentax K-x DSLR now official: 12.4MP, 720p video, coming October for $650

Looks like we didn't have to wait long after today's leak. Pentax has made its not quite entry-level DSLR, the K-x. All the earlier specs have panned out, so we're looking at a 12.4 megapixel CMOS censor, a 200 to 6400 ISO sensitivity expandable to 100 to 12,800, 4.7 frames per second continuous shooting, and 720p HD video at 24 frames per second. Sized up to the K-7, its wider ISO range is the only improvement, otherwise on par in features or lacking, as is in the case of AF / AE, video, and continuous shooting speed. It's due out in October available in black, white, red, or navy blue, with an attractive base price of $650 that nets you a 18-55mm lens.

JVC brings $1,000 HD Everio GZ-HM400 camcorder to America

JVC introduced its HD Everio GZ-HM400 in Japan way back in late July, but at long last, the time has come for the Yanks in attendance to grab one as their own. Shipping now (as in, right now) here on US soil, the Full HD camcorder packs a 10.3 megapixel sensor, 32GB of internal storage, an SD / SDHC expansion slot and the ability to capture stills at 9 megapixels. Over on the video side, users will have access to a trio of slow-motion recording modes (600fps, 300fps and 120fps), though we can't express in mere words how disheartened we are to hear that this thing utilizes the thoroughly worthless AVCHD format. If you aren't bothered in the least by that, you can pick yours up now for a nickle shy of a grand.

Canon's PowerShot SX20 IS superzoom gets superreviewed

You might be forgiven for not spotting the SX20 IS in the maelstrom of announcements Canon hit us with last month, so here's a thorough breakdown of the cam for your delectation. Replacing the year-old SX10, the SX20 IS adds 720p video recording at 30 fps and takes the pixel count up to 12 million. Strangely, it was features from the older model that earned praise, with the reviewers liking the 2.5-inch vari-angle display and UltraSonic Motor, which provided a smooth and silent zooming action. Their major gripe was image noise at ISO 400 and above, though picture quality was considered above average and macro performance was singled out for commendation. Leica gets official with M9 and X1 cameras, hands-on ensue

No surprises here (at all), but Leica's 09/09/09 event has just led to the formal unveiling of the full-frame, 18 megapixel M9 rangefinder and the compact X1. The former (which is shipping now) supports all Leica M lenses and ships with a 'newly developed glass sensor cover designed to guarantee the suppression of the infrared portion of the light spectrum.' There's also a quick-access ISO adjustment button alongside a few other hotkeys, a full metal housing, Kodak-sourced CCD, a fresh microprocessor-controlled shutter (which is supposedly 'near silent') and a staggering £4,850 ($8,004) price tag. As for the X1, you'll find a 12.1 megapixel CMOS sensor (APS-C), a fixed-mount Leica Elmarit 1:2.8/24mm lens, numerous 'auto' modes for the newbies in attendance, a maximum ISO of 3200, 2.7-inch rear LCD and a Live View function that replaces the optical viewfinder.
