Toshiba Satellite L645-S4102 REVIEW

You can find laptops with better performance and longer life of the Toshiba Satellite L645-S4102, which is on sale at Best Buy, but the price of this laptop ($ 529.99 list) strikes a good balance between the model extreme budget and cost a little more, slightly more powerful laptop that starts to hit just above $ 600.
If absolute performance is a concern, you may want to search their couch cushions to see if they can bring out another $ 70 or more to produce significantly more impressive Acer Aspire AS5742-6475 ($ 599.99 list, 4 stars) . If that is not a possibility, L645-S4102 should be able to meet their needs every day with little serious.

Design
Except for two spot finish, one just above the keyboard and the other on the touch screen and a shiny black bezel around the 14-inch, 1366 × 768, the L645-S4102 is very striking, in terms of appearance . Is covered with bright gray Helios "(the color of the sky during a thunderstorm during the day bad) with a weak swirl pattern visible everywhere, in no way surprising. The keys on the keyboard are all matte black flat square, and level of style (without gum here), but are sufficiently spaced and provide feedback tolerably elastic fingers.

The L645-S4102 weighs only 4.6 pounds, making it very portable for a budget laptop. Many similar machines weigh more, the Acer Aspire AS5742-6475 weighing up to 5 kilos, for example, and the Dell Inspiron iM501R-1655MRB (list $ 649.99, 3 stars) weighs 5.6 (a pound more than the L645-S4102).

Features
Toshiba promotes energy-efficiency, and is certified Energy Star and EPEAT Gold rating. This means that at least some of the components will be a success, and that includes the processor, a dual core, 2. 13-GHz Intel Pentium p6200 which definitely comes in near the bottom of the list of Intel processors. The set of 4 GB of RAM and 500GB hard drive are the components above average. The laptop is expected 802.11n Wi-Fi, but no support for Intel's WiMAX technology and wireless display Widi.

The L645-S4102 is also nothing exceptional in terms of port selection. In its left edge will find only an Ethernet jack, a USB 2.0 port, a combo eSATA / USB 2.0 and microphone and headphone jacks; join the DVD recorder and the outlet on the right edge is one more USB 2. 0 and a VGA output, a multiformat card reader is the only notable adornment along the front edge. No HDMI port for output to an HDTV.

In addition to the operating system Windows 7 Home Premium, Microsoft Office 2010 also comes preloaded on the L645-S4102.

Performance
As is the case with most budget notebooks, the L645-S4102 does not have outstanding performance. Compared to other similarly priced models, however, came about half of the table.

The L645-S4102 takes 3 minutes 31 seconds left handbrake our video encoding test, which is much faster than the Acer Aspire AS5253-BZ480 (8 minutes and 53 seconds), a shade faster than the -less-expensive NV50A02u Gateway (3 minutes and 32 seconds) and significantly slower than the Dell Inspiron iM501R-1655MRB (3 minutes 20 seconds), Sony VAIO VPC-EB33FM/BJ (3 minutes and 9 seconds), and Acer Aspire AS5742-6475 minutes (3 and 2 seconds.) The L645-S4102 scored only 1.4 in our Cinebench rendering test R11.5, among the lowest scores in this class (just another Toshiba, the L645D-S4025 (1.12), and the Acer Aspire AS5253-BZ480 (0 , 61) were lower. Need to 6 minutes and 38 seconds to run our Photoshop CS5 test, in which the laptop should apply a dozen filters and effects, the L645-S4102 was a company in third place, well behind the Acer Aspire AS5742- 6475 (5 minutes and 35 seconds) and the Sony VAIO (5 minutes and 39 seconds), but ahead of everyone else.

Like its competition, L645-S4102, which only sports Intel High Definition Integrated Graphics is not well suited for the game. Achieved 7.1 frames per second (fps) in Lost Planet 2 in 1024 by 768 with medium settings enabled, and 4.48 in Crysis in a similar configuration. We would like to compare to other notebooks in this category, but can not, as most of them do not even play the games! The only exception is the gateway, who scored 8.7 in Lost Planet 2, not a big (or play) improvement over the Toshiba. If you are interested in playing games that are casual, a more expensive laptop with a discrete video card is the only way forward.

The 6-cell 48 Wh battery in the L645-S4102 helped a duration of 4 hours and 42 minutes in our MobileMark 2007 test summary. That's close to being on par with what we saw in the notebooks of two Acer Aspire, 4 hours and 50 minutes (for the AS5253-BZ480) and 5 hours and 1 minute (for the AS5742-6475), but much better than Gateway, which could handle only 3 hours and 50 minutes.

Although the Toshiba Satellite L645-S4102 is a decent treatment, unless the money is an obstacle, you may want to consider the bombing of a little more (only an extra $ 70) for Acer Aspire AS5742-6475, which provides the improved battery life and stronger overall performance that could well be worth paying. If you can not go up, then, look at a soft side, the L645-S4102 for sure if they see through the most basic jobs.
